Applications: Applications for sintered titanium are limited by relatively weak mechanical properties. In fact, it finds some use in sensors and electrocatalysts. Its widespread use is as a pigment used in powder form by exploiting its optical properties.

The most important function of titanium dioxide is its use in powder form as a pigment to impart whiteness and opacity to products such as paints, coatings (including glazes and enamels), plastics, paper, ink, fabrics and food and cosmetics. Synthetic colorant. Used in food in fruit juices and powdered beverages, flour products, dairy products, chewing gum and confectionery, meat-fish products, canned fruits-vegetables, desserts, sauces and soups. Titanium dioxide is used much more commonly as a white pigment. It is very white and has a very high refractive index that can only be surpassed by diamond. The refractive index determines the opacity compared to the matrix in which the material contains the pigment. Therefore, low levels of titanium dioxide are required to obtain a white opaque coating. The high refractive index and bright white color of titanium dioxide makes it an effective opacifier for pigments. Used as opacifier in glass, porcelain enamels, cosmetics, sunscreens, paper and paints. Its most important advantage is its resistance to color degradation shown under UV light.

Photocatalysts: Titanium plays a role as a photosensitizer for photovoltaic films and when used as an electrode coating in photoelectrolysis, increases the efficiency of electrolytic separation of water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Oxygen Sensors: Even in mildly reducing atmospheres, titanium tends to lose oxygen and become sub-stoichiometric. In this form the material becomes a semiconductor and the electrical resistivity of the material can be correlated with the oxygen content of the exposed atmosphere. Therefore, titanium can be used to sense the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere.

Antimicrobial Coating: The photocatalytic activity of titanium is applied in thin material coatings that exhibit self-cleaning and disinfecting properties when exposed to UV radiation. These properties make the material a candidate for applications such as medical devices, food preparation surfaces, air conditioning filters and healthcare item surfaces.
