Properties: A solid that can slowly melt by capturing moisture. Absorbs moisture and can form a grayish or purple color over time. Alkaline, reacts to certain metals (Al, Cu, and their alloys).
Applications: Used for neutralization purposes in dairy products. Also used in soap production and fertilizer making. Adding potassium hydroxide to shaving soaps obtained from stearic acid and caustic soda ensures better foaming of the soap. Present as electrolyte in batteries. Generally used instead of sodium hydroxide in products where sodium amount should be limited. Used in foods, dyes, rubber production, and organic synthesis. In preparation of potassium salts; in synthesis of carbonates, phosphates, nitrates, permanganate, xanthates, and iodides, in industrial grade detergents, in formulations of fertilizers in solution, in insecticides and herbicides, in pigment production, in rubber production, in additives for rubber industry, in photography industry, in medical industry, in alkaline batteries (accumulators).
